Answer engines are the new search. Here's how to get cited in 2026.

Search changed while a lot of business owners weren't looking. People still Google things, but more and more they're asking ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot. Instead of a page of blue links, they get one synthesized answer, and often a short list of businesses the AI decided to trust.

That's a big shift. The game used to be ranking number one. Now a lot of the game is getting named in the answer itself. People call this Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. Same goal as always, get found, but the rules are different.

How AI decides who to mention

These systems don't rank pages the old way. They pull answers out of content that's clear, structured, and consistent. If your site spells out who you are, what you do, and where you do it in plain language, you're easy to cite. If your information is vague or scattered, you get skipped.

A few things that make you easy for an answer engine to trust:

  • Answer the question first. Lead with the plain answer, then explain. AI likes content that gets to the point.
  • Be consistent everywhere. Your name, address, hours, and services should match across your site, your Google profile, and every listing.
  • Use clear structure. Real headings, short sections, and the questions people actually ask. Schema markup helps machines read you.
  • Earn real reviews. AI reads the words in your reviews, not just the star count, to figure out what you're good at.

Your website still matters, maybe more

Here's the part that surprises people. Even though the AI answers the question, it's pulling from somewhere, and your website is the source it trusts most about you. A thin, confusing site gives it nothing to work with. A clear one gives it a reason to name you.

So the move in 2026 isn't to chase every new tool. It's to make your own site the cleanest, clearest source of truth about your business, so both people and the machines answering for them can find you.
